Types of courses (Go to top)

What types of courses can I create on Learno?
On Learno any course you create can be published as an online course and a book

What extra things do I need to do to publish a course as a book?
The same course you create online will be created as a book. No extra work is necessary in creating the content of the book

I have seen that some of the books contain pictures. How can I include pictures in my book?
In the course properties you can choose to include pictures in your book, but please note that each set of pictures os randomly mixed, so you will not know which exact pictures will appear with which question. As an example of this if you choose Oriental pictures you will see a random oriental picture with each question

What will be the format of my book?
Your book will be published as a 6 inches wide by 9 inches high book with black and white pages and a color front and back cover

How can I design the cover for my book?
We will assist you in creating a cover for your book

Will my name appear on the book as the author?
yes, your name will appear on the cover of the book as the author

I am creating a course on a product our company makes. Can I reference our company name in the questions?
Yes you can, but only if it is relevant to the course. Remember that people taking your test want to learn about the product you have created first and foremost

How can I make money?
You can make money by creating a course, and selling it as a book. You will receive 50% of the royalties we receive

Who owns the copyright for the courses I create on learno.com?
Learno.com owns the copyright, and therefore you are only permitted to add original content

But I can't publish unless I own the copyright, because the work is based on something I have written
We do realise that there are cases where it does not make sense for Learno to own the copyright. If you feel this is the case then email us at learno@gmail.com and ask us. For cases where Learno does not own the copyright we do require the copyright notice to be included in your course description

How often will I receive my book commission?
For commissions over $100 we can send you these every 30 days

Ideas for courses (Go to top)

What types of courses can I make?
We would recommend that you create courses which can be taught using words only. Learno is not suitable for teaching subjects which require the use of pictures or sound

I want to write a book for money. What would be a good idea for a book?
We would recommend a book which can has either a large potential market or a very specialised market. For example if you could make a really good book on Spanish that you think could be really unique then even though there are hundreds of books available for learning Spanish you would still have a good chance of selling some. As an example of a specialised market, some IT subjects such as JBoss have very few books available for them and generally books are quite high priced, so you would be very likely to have a few sales just by having a book available in that subject.

How can I write a novel with Learno?
We would recommend that you do not write novels with Learno as Learno is based on a learning technique called programmed learning and this learning method is not really suitable for telling a story. If you wish to write a novel then we recommend that you use Microsoft word.

Planning your course (Go to top)

I have decided to create a course. Where should I start?
You should first decide on the target market for your course, so that you know your audience. Think of their age range, their profession, and try to come up with a few examples of who would use your course or buy your book. That way you will be very clear on who to write your course for.

How do I know how many pages to make?
This is related to your target market as well. If you are planning on a language book useable by tourists then you should aim for a fairly light book, say less than 250 pages as the reader will probably read the book while travelling. This would be about 100 - 120 questions. If however you are writing an IT reference book then it is very likely that it will be used when the reader is sitting indoors, so up to 750 pages is ok for a book like this (less than 300 questions)

How should I divide up a course?
You should divide your course up into chapters. Each section can contain Learning text (chapter introduction) and questions

How should I plan my time?
When writing the course you should use the same techniques as used for speed writing. This involves doing a little bit of the course often.

What is the quickest way to create a course?
The quickest way we have found to create a course is to start with creating all the empty chapters, and then creating a chapter introduction for each. This will give you a good outline for your whole course and will force you to think about the course contents. Once you have the chapters finalized you should write just the questions into each chapter. Then when you have the questions for all the chapters done do a review of the whole course. This will make you think about things and make some changes. Once you have done this go through and make the correct answers and incorrect answers. Again, go through the whole course when you have done this. Then add explanations, and finally add keywords. Now that you have created your whole course you should ask a friend to review it for you, and then you should make any recommended changes.

What is the slowest create a course?
The slowest way to create a course, although sometimes the most fun is to just start writing questions as they come to you. While you can create your course like this for fairly small courses, say less than 50 questions you will find yourself in a mess if you try to create larger courses like this

Tips and tricks (Go to top)

Why should I use the group for my course on Learno?
By creating a group it will allow you to network with people who have taken your course

I'm writing a course but I need to know how I'm doing?
The only way to know how your doing is to get feedback from people. Our advice is that once you have about 20 questions you will probably start to get feedback from Learno users, and also you should send the course to people you know to give you feedback (at the top of every question page you just enter a friend or co-worker's email address).

I'm writing the course but may need some help
You can let other Learno members make edits, add questions and chapters, but not move existing questions and chapters. All their edits will be recorded so you know who has changed what. To enable this you must go to course properties and change the value of Who can edit this course from Only I can edit this course to Any members can contribute to this course

Writing a subject guide (Go to top)

I want to write a course on learning languages. Any ideas?
Learno already publishes several language courses. Take a look at these to see if they could follow a format that would be suitable for the language you wish to teach

I want to write a guide on another subject. Any ideas?
We would suggest that you choose a subject that you are interested in, and which could be taught well without illustrations

How should I structure my guide?
Start of with a brief introduction, and then slowly get into the details of the subject. Don't try to make your course too long. If you find you have to make more than 150 questions then you should consider creating a second book on the subject.

I want to write about a product my company makes. Any ideas on how to go about this?
Look at the Learno technology courses for examples of product guides. Just make sure the guide will be useful to customers of your product

I want a guide about a product my company makes. Can Learno help me with this?
If you want we can write the product guide fo you, but this will be on a paid basis. Contact us at learno@gmail.com to request this. We will assign one point of contact to your manager for this course, but also we will need our author/s to have contact with your technical staff to find out technical details and to make sure the guide is accurate.

How much does it cost to create a guide?
We will assign a full time author to your project who will work on nothing else. It is possible to create the guide on either a fixed cost basis, or on a per week basis. The cost of creating a guide on a weekly basis is US $400 per WEEK. Creating a guide on a weekly basis allows you to see progress immediately and is a low risk option for both parties

How can I write a good lesson plan?
We would recommend dividing up your course into sections and then teaching your students using learn text and then following this with questions based on what the student has learnt

I want to distribute my lessons to all my students in my class. How can I do this?
There are two ways to do this. The first is by creating a course and then giving everyone in the class/lecture the address of your course, eg: learno.com/mikes_science_class or by sending an email to every student from the top of each question page
